Dr. Emilio Matos

One of Dr. Matos greatest inventions, but also the one which did him the most harm. &lt;sp&gt;Matos spent many hours visiting the deep Fold, using the capsule to essentially overclock his own meager Diving skills. These Dives had a devastating effect on Matos's &lt;/sp&gt;physical and mental health.

Since the beginning of the Ascendants project, Dr. Matos and Vincent have spurred each other on: Dr. Matos’s technology enables Divers like Vincent to Dive with more proficiency; this stokes Vincent’s ambition, prompting him to make greater demands upon a grumbling Dr. Matos, who rises to the challenge and improves the technology, emboldening Vincent once further, and so on.The ultimate result of this cycle was Project UL-70a, the “Tethering capsule.” &nbsp;Dr. Matos spent many, many hours testing the device himself, but as usual, he never fully explained to anybody how the device worked. It is thought that it emits a frequency within its chamber that puts the subject into a sort of physical hibernation, while simultaneously heightening their mental activity; operating two capsules in a networked fashion creates a temporary entanglement of the subjects’ Shades. &nbsp;Whatever the mechanism, it satisfied Vincent’s demand for a device that would enable one Diver to “piggyback” on another to reach the Deep Fold.&nbsp;

Sneaking into Quinta Matos, the luxurious country estate of the brilliant inventor and Ascendant, Dr. Emilio Matos, Luther and Haroona uncover&lt;sp&gt; evidence that not only is Reika alive, but that she was held captive here prior. But to what end?&lt;/sp&gt; Exploring the estate reveals Matos latest invention, a cutting-edge machine that &lt;sp&gt;seemingly enhances a Diver’s ability to descend deeper into the Fold known as a Tethering Capsule. &nbsp;But for what purpose has Matos built this? How does it connect to Reika?&lt;/sp&gt;

Chapter 7, Part 1

Haroona stumbles upon &lt;sp&gt;a pair of these capsules and Buchra realizes immediately that Vincent plans to put Reika in one and piggyback on her Shade to reach Seshin in the Deep Fold.&lt;/sp&gt;

After an arduous descent into the Sanctuary, &lt;sp&gt;Haroona and Buchra break into the Terminal chamber to see the Cambrian device and tethering capsule already in use by Vincent and Reika. Haroona follows them into the Deep Fold where she coordinates with her past and future Shades to defeat Vincent, hurtling his untethered Shade into the unknown. However, it is too late: Reika succeeds in releasing Seshin.&lt;/sp&gt;&lt;sp&gt;Back in the Terminal chamber, Seshin’s dark form begins seeping from the Cambrian device into Haroona’s body, imbuing her with phenomenal Umbric power that she uses to dispatch all remaining Ascendants. Haroona is overwhelmed by the power inside her, and it threatens to consume her completely. Seeing Haroona in such a precarious state, Reika realizes her catastrophic error. She performs the ultimate sacrifice by drawing Seshin into herself, allowing Haroona to quickly place her mentor’s possessed body once again inside the Tethering Capsule. &nbsp;Contained in this makeshift prison, Seshin no longer resides within the Fold but cannot spread across the physical plane either, effectively placed in a state of perpetual stasis.&lt;/sp&gt;&lt;sp&gt;Having neutralized the threat, Buchra and Haroona emerge from the Oculus to observe Luther slumped on the ground, eyes closed but finally at peace.&lt;/sp&gt;

Chapter 12

After an arduous descent, &lt;sp&gt;Haroona and Buchra break into the chamber of the subterranean Terminal. Inside, the active Tethering capsule with both Vincent and Reika locked in machine stasis suggest the enemy is &lt;/sp&gt;already one step ahead.
