Dr. Matos crossed paths with Vincent when he was a younger man and knows Vincent's parents, the co-founders of the LYS. Today, he works closely with Vincent in order to gain access to the Deep Fold.

The Ascendants

Dr. Matos agreed to become the engineer and inventor for all of the Ascendants' technology needs. He is now an indispensable part of the organization and the key person who will be responsible for Vincent reaching Seshin.

Quinta Matos, Sintra, Portugal

Dr. Emilio Matos actually descends from a heritage of Portuguese Quaestors and eventually inherited the responsibility of maintaining Quinta Matos. Apart from being its heir, the country estate functions as his laboratory where he concocts his elaborate inventions.

Tethering Capsule

One of Dr. Matos greatest inventions, but also the one which did him the most harm. Matos spent many hours visiting the deep Fold, using the capsule to essentially overclock his own meager Diving skills. These Dives had a devastating effect on Matos's physical and mental health.

The Matos clan have for centuries been wealthy, well-connected Quaestors. To the outside world, they were advisors to the Portuguese monarchs, explorers, and academics. But privately, they were stewards of the Sahin Sanctuary housed beneath their estate, and were always pursuing the secrets of the Fold.Born the scion of this once great house, expectations of Emilio Matos were always high. He excelled in his studies, his academic career influenced by his passion for the physical sciences far more than the quasi-mystical Umbric research of his ancestors, for which he had only a passing interest.With him always was Sofia. Childhood friends who grow closer with time, they married as soon as their parents allowed it and welcomed their first child in due course. For a time, the newly doctoral Emilio had it all: wealth, family, and a promising career. Then, a tragedy took his child, and eventually his wife.The loss awakened his interest in the Fold. He quite literally launched himself into the subject with abandon, becoming a reclusive mad scientist figure in the process. Years later, it was the Leap Year Society that would finally reunite Dr. Matos with a community of his peers—not just scientists per se, but Quaestors. He had much to share with this hungry new audience, and the status this conferred him gave him newfound purpose. His work yielded many breakthroughs.His passion for reaching the Fold led him to work with the most talented Divers in a project informally dubbed “the Ascendants.” When this project gave way to the Great Divide, Matos tried to position himself as a mediating figure, until, given an ultimatum, he sided with the ones who seemed to offer more support for his work.Seeing the violence of the conflict, and the near-total destruction of the Society that he held dear, Matos once again retreated into himself; as the applications of his technology become more and more violent, so did his obsession with Diving, taking a terrible toll on his mental health. By the time the conflict reached its climax, &lt;sp&gt;Matos was a shell of his former self.&nbsp; He died the way he wanted to: exploring the Fold. Except, he’s not really gone, is he?&lt;/sp&gt;

Sneaking into Quinta Matos, the luxurious country estate of the brilliant inventor and Ascendant, Dr. Emilio Matos, Luther and Haroona uncover&lt;sp&gt; evidence that not only is Reika alive, but that she was held captive here prior. But to what end?&lt;/sp&gt; Exploring the estate reveals Matos latest invention, a cutting-edge machine that &lt;sp&gt;seemingly enhances a Diver’s ability to descend deeper into the Fold known as a Tethering Capsule. &nbsp;But for what purpose has Matos built this? How does it connect to Reika?&lt;/sp&gt;

Quinta Matos: Signs of Life

When Luther and Haroona catch a glimpse of Dr. Matos asking some lackeys to bring him &lt;sp&gt;to the Terminal, he does not seem his usual sharp self. He is in fact deep into his obsession with the Fold, and it has taken a toll on him, leaving mostly detached from reality.&lt;/sp&gt;

On the remote possibility of &lt;sp&gt;reuniting with Reika, Haroona follows the inventor Matos towards a dangerous underground Sanctuary. At Luther's insistence, she performs her first Dive into the Fold only to be welcomed by a blissful Dr. Matos who asserts the two have encountered one another many times before. To save Reika, she must obtain an artifact known as the Cambrian device. Later, Haroona catches a distant but terrifying glimpse of Seshin before a harrowing escape ensues.&lt;/sp&gt;

Encountering &lt;sp&gt;Haroona's shade, Dr. Matos explains to her that both of them have met many times in the Deep Fold before. He also ushers her towards her first real glimpse of Seshin.&lt;/sp&gt;
