This period marked the end of the Leap Year Society’s Golden Age. There was nothing golden about the death, betrayal, destruction of irreplaceable artifacts, and the loss of extensive Umbric research that characterized the Great Divide.

The Ascendants

The Ascendants truly came into their own during the Great Divide. Their numbers swelled, their purpose became more sharply defined, and many of their early members—moderates who initially sought only minor reforms within the Leap Year Society—became horrified at what the group had evolved into. (Horrified, yet complicit.)

In early 1908, the LYS was at the pinnacle of its golden age, but a deep schism was fomenting among its members. A faction of the LYS, who called themselves the Ascendants, were obsessively pursuing a dangerous, mysterious presence in the Deep Fold, known as Seshin. Their goals and methods did not sit well with much of the Society, who finally decided to shutter the Ascendants doors and forbid their continued pursuit of Seshin.&nbsp;The Ascendants' leader, Vincent Lichter, rallied those behind him in pursuit of pure knowledge and responded by essentially declaring war on the LYS on February 29th, 1908, triggering the period known as the Great Divide. A period that threw the LYS in a sort of civil war amongst its clandestine members. Lines were drawn in the sand; friends became foes and the Society was never the same again.
